In crisis right now? If you or someone you love is thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) — free, confidential, 24/7. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

Mental health and substance use rarely travel alone. Nearly half of people living with a serious mental health condition also struggle with drugs or alcohol — and treating only one side leaves the other to pull them back. At Totality Treatment Center in Los Angeles, California, we treat both at the same time, with one coordinated team and a plan built around you.

Whether you’re facing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, or thoughts of suicide — with or without an accompanying addiction — you don’t have to sort out where to start. We’ll help you understand what you’re dealing with, verify your insurance, and get you into care quickly.

What is dual diagnosis (co-occurring disorders)?

Dual diagnosis — also called co-occurring disorders — means a person has both a mental health condition (such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder) and a substance use disorder at the same time. It’s common: according to national data, roughly half of people with a substance use disorder also experience a mental illness, and vice versa.

The two feed each other. Someone with untreated anxiety may drink to quiet it; heavy drinking then deepens the anxiety. Treating the addiction alone — or the mental health condition alone — usually isn’t enough, because the untreated condition keeps re-lighting the fire.

Integrated dual diagnosis treatment addresses both conditions together, with a single team coordinating therapy, medication, and support so nothing falls through the cracks. Research consistently shows this integrated approach produces better, longer-lasting outcomes than treating each condition separately. That integrated model is the foundation of everything we do at Totality.

Mental health conditions we treat

You don’t need a co-occurring addiction to get help here. We treat mental health conditions on their own and alongside substance use.

Depression

Persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, and difficulty functioning. We combine evidence-based therapy (CBT), medication management when appropriate, and lifestyle and family support to help you feel like yourself again. Depression is highly treatable — most people improve significantly with the right care.

Anxiety

Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, and phobias can make ordinary days feel unmanageable. Our anxiety therapy blends cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure-based techniques, mindfulness, and — where indicated — medication, so you can regain control instead of organizing life around avoidance.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder involves shifts between depressive lows and manic or hypomanic highs. It’s a lifelong but very manageable condition. Effective bipolar treatment typically pairs mood-stabilizing medication with psychotherapy and psychoeducation, plus routines and monitoring that help prevent relapse. Our team helps you build a stable, sustainable plan — not just get through the current episode.

PTSD & trauma

Trauma can drive nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and avoidance — and it frequently underlies both depression and addiction. We use trauma-focused approaches including EMDR and trauma-focused CBT to process what happened and reduce its grip on the present.

OCD & other conditions

We also treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, adjustment disorders, and other conditions with evidence-based, individualized care.

Suicidal ideation

If you’re having thoughts of suicide, please know two things: these thoughts are more common than most people realize, and they are treatable. Treatment for suicidal ideation starts with safety and stabilization, then addresses the underlying condition — often depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, or substance use — through therapy, medication management, and close support. You are not a burden, and reaching out is a sign of strength.

If you’re thinking about suicide right now, call or text 988 or call 911. You can also call our team at (855) 619-5383 — we’ll help you take the next step.

Addiction & substance use treatment

When a mental health condition comes with drug or alcohol use, we treat the addiction as an equal partner in care — never an afterthought. We provide treatment for:

Care includes relapse-prevention skills, medication-assisted treatment where appropriate, and the same integrated coordination with your mental health treatment. Evidence-based therapies

Every plan at Totality is built from proven, research-backed modalities — chosen for your diagnosis, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum:

What to expect: your treatment journey

  1. Confidential assessment. A licensed clinician listens to your history and current struggles, and helps clarify the diagnosis — including any co-occurring conditions.
  2. A personalized treatment plan. We match your level of care and therapies to your needs and goals, and verify your insurance so cost is clear up front.
  3. Active treatment. You work with a consistent, small-caseload team — individual therapy, group work, medication management, and family involvement as appropriate.
  4. Aftercare & relapse prevention. Before you finish, we build a step-down and support plan so progress holds — outpatient sessions, telehealth check-ins, and community resources.
