What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
Dual diagnosis — also called co-occurring disorders — describes the simultaneous presence of a substance use disorder and a mental health condition. Common combinations include:
- » Alcohol use disorder with depression or anxiety
- » Opioid addiction with PTSD or trauma
- » Stimulant use disorder with bipolar disorder
- » Benzodiazepine dependence with panic disorder or BPD
- » Substance use co-occurring with compulsive sexual behavior or sex and love addiction
Treating only one condition typically leads to relapse in the other. Totality’s dual diagnosis approach addresses both disorders in a fully integrated program — same clinical team, same facility, one coordinated treatment plan.

“Most clients who come through our doors have co-occurring disorders. We look at all of the diagnoses the client has, build treatment plans tailored for those specific issues, and ensure we treat all of the symptoms we’re seeing.” — Dr. Brooke Adams, PsyD, Clinical Director
