When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough
Structured anxiety treatment makes sense when anxiety is interfering with work, school, sleep, or relationships despite outpatient therapy — or when panic attacks, constant worry, or avoidance are shrinking your life faster than a weekly session can address. A PHP or IOP provides daily or near-daily clinical contact, skills practice between sessions, and psychiatric support in one coordinated program.
Anxiety Conditions We Treat
- » Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — chronic, uncontrollable worry with physical tension and sleep disruption
- » Panic disorder — recurrent panic attacks and fear of the next one
- » Social anxiety disorder — avoidance of social and performance situations
- » Health anxiety — persistent fear of illness despite reassurance
- » Anxiety with co-occurring depression, PTSD, or OCD — treated together in one plan
How We Treat Anxiety
- » Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — the first-line, best-evidenced treatment for anxiety disorders: identifying catastrophic thinking and cognitive distortions, and retraining the response
- » Mindfulness and DBT-based skills — grounding, distress tolerance, and learning to respond instead of react
- » Psychiatric evaluation and medication management — by Ian R. Tofler, MD, board-certified psychiatrist, when medication is clinically appropriate
- » EMDR — when anxiety is rooted in trauma, provided by an EMDR-trained therapist on staff
- » Biofeedback — training the body’s stress response directly
- » Group therapy — practicing skills with others who understand, which is itself exposure work for social anxiety
- » Nutritional psychiatry — addressing the diet–gut–anxiety relationship through Nutrition in Recovery groups

“Cognitive behavioral therapy really looks at the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We target negative self-talk and cognitive distortions like catastrophizing, and teach clients how to reframe those thoughts to lead to better emotions and choices.” — Dr. Brooke Adams, PsyD, Clinical Director

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get anxiety treatment in Los Angeles?
Totality Treatment Center in West Los Angeles treats generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and health anxiety in structured PHP and IOP programs, led by Clinical Director Brooke Adams, PsyD and Medical Director Ian R. Tofler, MD. Programs run in person, virtually anywhere in California, or hybrid. Call (855) 619-5383 for a free assessment.
What is the most effective treatment for severe anxiety?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the best-evidenced treatment for anxiety disorders, often combined with medication for moderate-to-severe cases. When weekly CBT isn’t enough, a structured program (IOP or PHP) provides daily skills practice, group-based exposure, psychiatric oversight, and adjuncts like biofeedback and mindfulness training in one coordinated plan.
Can anxiety be treated in an IOP?
Yes. Totality’s IOP treats anxiety as a primary diagnosis — 3 hours per day, 3 to 5 days per week of CBT-based group and individual therapy with psychiatric support, available in person or online, including evenings.
Do I need medication for anxiety?
Not necessarily. Every Totality client receives a psychiatric evaluation by Medical Director Ian R. Tofler, MD; medication is recommended only when clinically appropriate, and always alongside — not instead of — therapy.
Can I do anxiety treatment online?
Yes. Totality’s virtual IOP and PHP are available to adults anywhere in California with live, clinician-led video sessions. For clients whose anxiety makes leaving home difficult, virtual care is often the most realistic way to start, with the option to transition to in-person or hybrid.
Does insurance cover anxiety treatment programs?
Yes — PHP and IOP for anxiety are standard behavioral-health benefits under most plans. Totality is in-network with Blue Shield of California, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum, and Health Net, and accepts Aetna PPO and other PPO plans. Call (855) 619-5383 for a free benefits check.
