Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

PHP is the most structured level of outpatient care — you attend treatment for a full day, several days a week, then return home in the evening. It offers the intensity of residential treatment without an overnight stay.

Q: How many hours per week is PHP at Totality?

Our PHP runs approximately 30 hours per week, typically across five days, combining individual therapy, group sessions, and psychiatric care.

Q: What’s the difference between PHP and IOP?

PHP is more intensive — more hours per week and a higher level of clinical support — while an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) involves fewer weekly hours and more flexibility. Many clients step down from PHP to IOP as they progress.

Q: Does Totality’s PHP accept insurance?

Yes. We’re in-network with many major insurers, including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Optum, and Health Net. We also accept other health plans with out-of-network benefits, such as Aetna PPO and Cigna PPO, among others. Coverage depends on your specific plan and medical necessity — and we’ll verify your benefits at no cost.

Q: Is PHP available through telehealth in California?

We offer in-person PHP in Los Angeles, with telehealth options available across California depending on clinical appropriateness. Contact us to find what fits your situation.

Q: Who is PHP right for?

PHP is a good fit for people who need more support than weekly therapy or an IOP can provide — including those stepping down from detox or inpatient care, or managing co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions — but who don’t require 24/7 residential care.
