Intensive Outpatient Program in Los Angeles

Totality Treatment Center’s intensive outpatient program serves clients across Los Angeles from our West LA location at 11150 W Olympic Blvd, minutes from Santa Monica, Brentwood, Century City, Culver City, and Beverly Hills. Our IOP is designed for adults who need structured clinical treatment for substance use, mental health, or co-occurring conditions but who are stable enough to live at home and continue working, studying, or caring for family.

IOP at Totality runs three hours a day, three to five days a week, with morning and evening tracks so that treatment fits around a work schedule rather than replacing it. Most clients step into IOP either directly at admission or as a step down from our partial hospitalization program (PHP). Clients who need a higher level of structure can begin in PHP and transition into IOP as they stabilize.

What IOP treats

Our clinicians treat substance use disorder, alcohol use disorder, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD and trauma, and dual diagnosis — a mental health condition and a substance use disorder occurring together. Treatment is delivered by licensed clinicians using evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, EMDR, motivational interviewing, and group and family therapy.

Does insurance cover IOP in Los Angeles?

In most cases, yes. Intensive outpatient treatment is a covered behavioral health benefit under most PPO plans, and federal parity law requires insurers to cover mental health and substance use treatment comparably to medical care. Totality is in network with Blue Shield of California, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum / UnitedHealthcare, and Health Net. We do not hold contracts with Aetna or Cigna, but we can often accept their PPO plans on an out-of-network basis, subject to your individual policy and a benefits check. We cannot accept Medi-Cal or Medicare. We verify your benefits before admission and tell you what your plan covers and what, if anything, you would owe out of pocket — with no obligation to enroll.

How to start

Admissions are open 6am to 9pm PST at (855) 619-5383. A clinician will complete a confidential assessment, usually the same day, and recommend the level of care that actually fits — which is sometimes not IOP, and sometimes not Totality. If a different provider or a higher level of care is the right answer, we will tell you and help you find it.

Totality Treatment Center is an outpatient provider. We do not offer medical detox, residential treatment, or sober living housing. Clients who need medically supervised withdrawal are referred to a detox partner first and can begin PHP or IOP with us afterward.

Outpatient mental health treatment in Los Angeles

Outpatient mental health treatment means structured clinical care without an overnight stay. You attend scheduled sessions at our West Los Angeles offices — or by telehealth — and go home afterwards, keeping your job, your studies, and your family routine intact.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. The most common reason people delay treatment is that stopping life for thirty days is impossible. An outpatient mental health program removes that barrier: the clinical intensity is real, but it is scheduled around the life you are trying to hold together.

Totality runs three independent tracks. Some clients come to us for a mental health condition alone. Some come for substance use alone. Some need both addressed together as dual diagnosis. You do not need a substance use disorder to be treated here, and you will not be routed into an addiction program if that is not what you are dealing with.

  • Depression and depressive disorders — outpatient treatment for depression, including treatment-resistant presentations
  • Anxiety and panic
  • PTSD and trauma — with EMDR and trauma-focused modalities
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Dual diagnosis — a mental health condition and a substance use disorder together

Outpatient program levels: PHP, IOP and IIP

“Outpatient” is not one thing. It describes a range of intensities, and the right one depends on how much structure you need each week rather than on how serious your condition is.

Partial hospitalization (PHP) is the most intensive outpatient level — around 30 hours a week, roughly six hours a day, five days a week. It suits acute stabilization, or stepping down from inpatient care. Intensive outpatient (IOP) runs 9 to 15 hours a week across three to five days, with day and evening tracks. Individualized intensive programming (IIP) delivers the same clinical intensity one-to-one, for people whose schedule, privacy needs, or clinical picture does not fit a group track.

Most people move between levels rather than staying at one. Starting in PHP and stepping down to IOP as things stabilize is the common path. A clinical assessment determines the starting point.

What outpatient therapy actually involves

Programming combines clinically led group therapy, individual therapy with a consistent primary clinician, and psychiatric review where medication is part of the plan. Groups are not open-ended discussion; they are structured around specific clinical work — emotional regulation, relapse prevention, trauma processing, grief, identity.

Modalities used across the program include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), EMDR for trauma, motivational interviewing, and family or relationship sessions where clinically appropriate and consented to.

Outpatient psychiatric treatment — evaluation and medication management — may be delivered by appropriately licensed affiliated providers coordinating with your Totality team. Availability depends on clinical need, scheduling, insurance coverage, and your individual treatment plan.
